Robin Mitchell, BA, MSW, RSW provides a variety of mental health and psychotherapy services for adults (16 and over). While initially operating from an office in Burlington, Ontario, due to COVID constraints, Robin's services are now exclusively offered online (i.e. Zoom) or by phone. His goal is to give effective, excellent and timely service to address your needs. Robin can assist with your concerns including anxiety, trauma, depression, relationship problems, losses and conflicts. Robin provides personalized and evidence-based talk therapy (psychotherapy) as well as education regarding mental health issues.
Flexible appointment times are available to meet with Robin for respectful and honest conversation about your concerns. To begin, a short discussion of your needs and goals takes place by phone . There is no charge for this first step. After we agree to move forward with counselling or psychotherapy, a $150.00 session rate applies. A session lasts typically 60-75 minutes.

Robin has over 20 years of experience in providing psychotherapy to individuals, families and groups at local community mental health clinics. His formal training includes a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Social Work degree (University of Toronto) and he is a Registered Social Worker (RSW) here in Ontario. Robin is also an Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University where he has a teaching role with medical students.
Robin has worked successfully with people struggling with a wide variety of emotional and relationship problems. In order to help his clients build better lives and relationships, he gently encourages them to let go of unhelpful ways of thinking, feeling and habits using a variety of psychotherapies including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and IPT (Interpersonal Therapy).
EMDR is a clinically proven therapy which is particularly helpful with traumatic memories and experiences, but useful for other types of emotional wounds as well. Robin completed his EMDR training with EMDR Canada and is a registered member.
Robin's CBT training was completed at McMaster University, and he frequently uses tools from this psychotherapy to help people master their anxiety and mood problems.
IPT is another type of psychotherapy that Robin uses to support people as they resolve difficult life transitions, losses and relationship issues (such as, separation, divorce, bereavement, and major life changes associated with parenting, moving, employment and retirement). Using conversations with a non-judgmental approach, Robin has assisted his clients regain a sense of stability and hope in their lives.

2. Trauma - An excellent book to provide an overview of trauma and current treatment is Van der Kolk, Bessel (2014) The Body Keeps Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma, New York: Penguin books. EMDR is a very good evidence-based treatment for trauma and with coping with events from the past that cause emotional distress in the present. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has national organizations in Canada and USA with websites that describe EMDR and relevant research ( emdrcanada.org and emdr.com).
3. Anxiety and Depression - A good CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ) workbook to aid anxiety is Greenberger, D., & Padesky, C., (2016) Mind Over Mood: Change How you Feel by Changing the Way You Think, New York: The Guilford Press. For depression and examining how cognitive distortions contribute to low mood, Burns, D., Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy, is helpful. For death anxiety an excellent and sensitive book is Yalom, Irvin, (2009) Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death, San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
